About

Bridging the Knowledge Gap, Future-Proofing American Students

The U.S. leads the world in talent and innovation, but outdated education and biased narratives leave American students in the dark about China’s rapid advancements. This knowledge gap isn’t your fault—it’s a systemic issue that threatens your future competitiveness.

That’s where SUBP steps in. It’s the only U.S.-China immersive learning program designed to keep you globally competitive. Unlike typical language or culture-based exchange programs, SUBP gives you direct access to China’s cutting-edge tech, education, and real-world innovations. Through hands-on projects and cross-cultural teamwork, you’ll build must-have skills like tech awareness, critical thinking, and international collaboration—getting you ready to succeed in a connected world.

Backed by data and expert design, SUBP isn’t just about understanding China—it’s about future-proofing your career and mastering collaboration for shared global prosperity.

On November 15, 2023, the heads of state of China and the United States agreed to promote and strengthen dialogue and cooperation in various fields between China and the United States, including expanding exchanges in education, international students, youth, and culture.

The Challenge: Understanding China Is No Longer Optional

The United States and China are deeply intertwined economies and innovation hubs, shaping global industries, trade, and technological advancements.

  • Bilateral trade reached $690.6 billion in 2022. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau).
  • Companies like Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Tesla—rely on China’s market and supply chains.
  • A 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 62% of Americans believe that having employees with international experience is crucial for U.S. companies. (Pew Research).

Whether viewed as a competitor, partner, or both, understanding China is essential for students entering global industries.

China’s Rapid Rise: A Global Force in Tech & Education

China is surging ahead in technology and education, reshaping the global landscape. For American students, this isn’t just news—it’s a wake-up call. Ignoring China’s advancements won’t stop them; it only limits your edge in a competitive job market. Engaging with its tech and education, however, can boost your career advantage. Here’s what you need to know:

China’s Leadership in Critical & Emerging Technologies

China has taken the lead or is rapidly catching up in key technological fields as a result of massive investment in R&D, talent recruitment, and deep-tech innovation.
  • Invests over 2.5% of GDP on R&D—comparable to the U.S.—and filed almost half of the world’s patents in 2023. (WIPO, OECD)
  • Leads in 37 of 44 critical technologies—think 5G, drones, renewable energy—per a U.S. State Department-funded study (Australian Strategic Policy Institute)

🔹 Electric Vehicles (EVs)

  • Produces 58% of the world’s EVs, leading in smart driving and battery tech
  • BYD overtook Tesla in global sales in 2024. (Wikipedia)

🔹 Artificial Intelligence (AI):

  • DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, recently broke through U.S. AI restrictions and is now used by Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and NVIDIA.
  • President Donald Trump called it a “wake-up call for America,” admitting China’s AI strength.

🔹 Humanoid Robotics:

  • Unitree Robotics is already ahead of U.S. firms like Boston Dynamics in commercialization.
  • NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang showcased the Unitree Robotics H1 robot at CES 2025
  • Elon Musk recognizes China’s robotics edge. x.com  x.com
  • Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO and chair of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI), stated that China’s advancements in humanoid robotics could overtake the U.S.

Believing China’s tech rise relies on IP theft or cheap labor is a dangerous misconception—one that blinds you to real opportunities. Ignoring these advancements doesn’t slow China down; it just puts you behind in a global job market. Engaging with its tech gives you a career edge.

The Rise of China’s Higher Education: A Data-Backed Boom

For decades, the U.S. dominated higher education and research. However, China is closing the gap, especially in STEM, reshaping the global talent game.

China’s STEM Dominance:

  • Graduates 4.7 million STEM students yearly, topping the U.S. and India combined (World Economic Forum)
  • Claims 47% of top AI researchers globally, up from 29% in 2019; the U.S. has just 18% (MacroPolo)
  • Outpaces the U.S. in research for materials science, engineering, and chemistry (Nature Index)

China’s Universities Climb the Ranks: (U.S. News & World Report)

Global University Rankings Chinese Universities  U.S. Universities

Talent Grab:

  • Chinese universities recruit professors from Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Stanford
  • China’s top tech firms lure top scientists from Silicon Valley and Europe

Underestimating China’s education boom leaves you unprepared for global competition. Ignoring its talent recruitment could mean missing out on future jobs and partnerships.

Why This Matters to You:

China’s rise isn’t just headlines—it’s your future. Misjudging it as mere imitation risks leaving you out of the loop on tech breakthroughs and job prospects. Staying informed and engaged keeps you competitive in a world where China’s influence is undeniable.

The Reality: A Deeply-Rooted National Knowledge Gap

Despite China’s growing global importance, American students lack accurate and up-to-date knowledge about modern China, while Chinese students benefit from far greater exposure to the U.S. through education, media, and pop culture.

The 2024 China Knowledge Assessment Report revealed a striking gap:

  • Even academically exceptional Chinese American students, despite their cultural ties, language proficiency, and prior exposure to China, scored only 42/95 on modern China knowledge.
  • Non-Chinese American students were estimated to score as low as 25/95, demonstrating a severe lack of awareness.

This asymmetry in knowledge puts American students at a disadvantage in global industries—think international business, technology leadership, and policymaking—where understanding China is no longer optional but essential.

Why Does This Knowledge Gap Exist?

The report identifies four key reasons why American students remain under-informed about China’s advancements:

  • China’s unprecedented rise: Its rapid transformation is historically unique, making it difficult for even experts to keep up—let alone students with limited exposure.
  • Failing formal education: East Asian Studies courses had only a 4.65% impact on students’ knowledge, while Mandarin coursework showed a surprising -2.44% impact.
  • Unreliable primary sources: Students often rely on parents and social circles for information about China which are inconsistent and unsystematic learning tools.
  • Media & narrative bias: China’s technological and economic advancements are often downplayed or overlooked due to political and ideological factors.

Expanding your horizon is not just about seeing the world—it’s about knowing where the future is headed and making smart, strategic choices.  Without a clear understanding of China’s role in shaping global trends, American students risk falling behind in a competitive job market where knowledge of China is a game-changer.

The Solution: SUBP

The knowledge gap between American students and China’s rapid advancements is a national issue—but waiting for systemic reforms isn’t an option. Technology like AI and robotics won’t pause, and falling behind now means missing out on career and leadership opportunities later. That’s why SUBP launched in 2024—to get you ready for global competition today.

SUBP 2024 Testimonials

  • Our use of the phrase “outdated education on Modern China” refers specifically to the K–12 level (high school and below) in the United States. Based on preliminary reviews of publicly available curricula, textbooks, and student feedback, we have found that most U.S. schools still focus primarily on ancient Chinese history or Cold War–era diplomacy, with very limited coverage of China’s transformation since 2000, especially developments after 2010 in areas such as mobile technology, AI, green energy, and higher education.

We acknowledge that our research base is limited, and we are not educational experts. We are a group of concerned parents and educators aiming to raise awareness of this critical gap. We welcome input and collaboration from scholars, institutions, and practitioners to improve our understanding and expand the evidence base behind this observation.
