2023 SHS Seminar Recap

On Saturday, May 27, 2023, Youth4AM held a Specialized High School Seminar to inform students and parents about some of the high schools that kids can go to in NYC.

First off, we went through a presentation about Youth4AM, our SHSAT preparation program for middle schoolers. Erica Liu discussed our tutoring methods, our results, and what makes our program unique.

Next, Erica Liu discussed what Youth4AM’s tutoring plan will look like and how our program will amplify our student’s capabilities.

We then moved onto the actual high school showcase! For each school, we had a representative (usually from that school) present the basics and the quirks of each high school. There was then a short Q&A for the speaker to answer anything the audience had to ask. Here are the representatives we had for each school:

    – Erica Liu for Stuyvesant

    – Corina Zheng for Brooklyn Tech

    – Sharlene Chen for Brooklyn Latin

    – Jennifer Chen for Bronx Science

    – Jacqueline Ramirez and Darren Chin for Staten Island Tech

    – Lian Levine for LaGuardia

    – Feng Yi Yang for HSMSE

    – Erica Liu** for York

    – Jennifer Chen** for Lehman

** Because some of our previously-decided speakers were not able to make it, these people presented information for the high school even though they did not attend it.

Stuyvesant offers a wide range of opportunities for students. They have a wide range of clubs and classes to choose between and they accept a lot of students. Stuyvesant also is very rigorous with its academics and offers a hefty workload. The commute also varies depending on where you live, ranging from a couple minutes to around 2 hours.

Bronx Science has many clubs, teams, and research opportunities for students to choose from. It also offers plenty of ways to help students, such as tutors and other after school programs. There are also a variety of delis nearby that students can go to during their breaks if they want a snack.

Brooklyn Tech has around 200 clubs that are offered to students, as well as multiple classes and sports teams. It also has a large community with a vast range of cultures.

LaGuardia is special compared to the other specialized high schools because their subjects mostly pertain to the arts, ranging from music to theater to visual arts. It also has a large community to help people with social connections.

Staten Island Tech has a strong focus on STEM subjects, known for its mathematics and technology. It has a relatively small community, allowing students and teachers to have better relationships. It also has a friendly environment with various methods of reducing stress.

HSMSE offers rigorous courses for those who plan on focusing on STEM subjects, while also having other notable departments such as language and English. It has a relatively small community full of exceptional students and professors. It is also a part of the City College of New York and is a relatively small school.

Brooklyn Latin has a couple extracurriculars to choose from. Latin is a mandatory subject that you have to take for 4 years. The school’s teaching curriculum mostly surrounds classical liberal arts and is one of the most diverse specialized high schools.

Lehman is a school more focused on the liberal arts and they emphasize American history and government. It’s also required to take three years of Spanish in Lehman and there are less math and science APs to choose from.

Queens High School for the Sciences offers a couple of college courses which can provide college credits. There are also a variety of extracurriculars and the school is relatively small.

Overall, the specialized high schools in New York offer a unique educational experience for academically gifted students. They foster many skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and time management, helping students strive for a successful future. With their wide selection of courses in each department, most of which rank among the top in the state, these schools are a valuable platform for motivated students to pursue their own goals and interests. At Youth4AM, we provide the classes that will help students qualify for these competitive and challenging schools by enriching their knowledge and preparing them for the admissions exam.
